Oklahoma City
Welcome to Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City is the largest city in Oklahoma, and it’s State Capitol. The city ranks 31st in population in the U.S. but when you add in the suburbs and feeder cities, it population goes upwards to 1.25 million people. It is the 7th largest city by land area, and extends into 4 Oklahoma Counties. Oklahoma City’s downtown is crossed by two major interstates, I-35 and I-40 which cross at the SE corner of downtown. Oklahoma City is home to two of the largest independent energy companies in the world in Devon and Chesapeake, and is also home to next to the State Capitol complex, the second largest employer in Oklahoma, Tinker Air Force Base, one of the largest in the world. Other major employers are Dell Computers, The FAA, AT&T, UPS, and Cox Communications. Between 2001 and 2005, Oklahoma City’s economy grew by 33%, and currently possesses one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.
Sadly, Oklahoma City is also known as the location of the largest act of domestic terrorism in the bombing of The Murrah Federal Building in 1995. Since that time, the citizens have okayed two large programs called the MAPS projects which added a temporary sales tax of 1 cent, and produced billions in rebuilding downtown, and uniquely rebuilding 75% of the Oklahoma City school buildings in new construction. Since that time, projects have been passed to upgrade the Ford Center to NBA standards, and we now have the NBA Thunder which is about to start its second year to sold out crowds. Truly Oklahoma City and its citizens are proactive, and now we are used as a model for how cities rebuild their infrastructure.
